I originally put these notes together about protecting my reputation on social media for my own personal growth. I had no clue what these social platforms could do for my blog. So I guess you can say I jumped on the social media bandwagon a little later than everyone else so I had to hustle and become familiar with the do’s and don’ts of social media and it was a whole lot of information to soak up.
The one thing I learned is that in order to establish yourself as a trustworthy and a reliable resource, we have to start by engaging in conversations (there’s that word “engage” again) with our followers and provide the tools and resources they’re looking for and hoping to get from us. You know, build an online reputation to gain more followers.
On the flip side, there are some things we may be doing like the ones I’m about to share with you here. These certain behaviors can cause us to lose followers. And instead of being recognized for our content and other resources we share on our social media pages, we’re known for the negative things we do.
Protect Your Online Reputation By Avoiding These Things On Social Media
Using Bad Language
Remember you’re trying to establish yourself in this big ole social media arena. Your goal is to have your posts or articles retweeted on Twitter or shared on Facebook or LinkedIn. But how can someone forward your great content when your intro verbiage is fckng this or shttng on that.
Posting Much About Nothing
Being inconsistent can also cause you to lose followers. Remember we live in the world of a WIIFM – What’s In It For Me. So tweets and status updates should be fun, engaging, personable, most of all informative and solutions they’re looking for. In other words, give your followers a reason to keep following you and reading your updates.
Posting Inappropriate Updates
Be careful of what you post and try to keep your tweets and updates politically correct. Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and it’s your page, you can post and say whatever you want. That’s what your personal FB profile is for. Remember your Facebook page is to promote your blog or business. So if your FB page is all about sharing recipes, I would not post your thoughts about, let’s say, the Presidential election and the candidates. The chances of you losing followers, who are also potential customers are high.
Inappropriate Social Media Profile Pic
It’s the first impression you make. If you want to be taken seriously I recommend a picture of your beautiful or handsome face or your company logo. Stay away from the pics of you out on the town with girlfriends looking a little tipsy and if it’s a selfie, avoid the pouty lips and other typical selfie poses.
Bad Links
If you’re consistently sending out bad links, you’ll lose whatever followers you’ve built. This is a fast-paced world and people want it like yesterday. If you can’t get it to them when they want it, they can find someone else who will have the same information and whose link work, so double check your links before hitting send! This was especially for me.
Posting For Your Own Personal Gain
I’m all for making money after all that’s the reason why we’re in business in the first place but if all you’re doing is posting your affiliate products to make a sale, yawn…you’re going to lose some followers. Engage them with original, fresh content. Send well wishes and other friendly messages or news they can use. And if you are promoting a product, take some time and tell them why they need to buy it. What will they gain from product?
